In addition to spending time outdoors and walking, it is good to include an activity whereby you get close to nature through learning about it. Birdwatching is a very popular activity today which presents to the bird-watcher a distinctive sense of delight and union with nature. Light, birds of all colours and characters aren’t easily accessible to us and they usually get to great heights that are out of reach. We should treat them with respect because they form part of a fascinating game which mother nature brings to us. Birdwatching is an activity which entails observation and study of birds with the naked eye and through binoculars, spyglasses and, in recent times, photographic equipment (i.e. cameras with strong lenses). Lately, the term birding has been widely used. Whilst birdwatching refers to visual observation of birds, birding includes the overall experience of recognizing birds according to their voices, songs and behaviour.

Birdwatching in a special ornithological sanctuary Palud – Palu’

Birdwatching in a special ornithological sanctuary Palud – Palu’ is an all year round activity. Spring migration covers the period from February to April. From May until the middle of July is the season of nesting, then followed by the migration of small marsh birds, which is the most attractive period for birdwatching. Autumn migration lasts from September till the end of December, while January provides a good period for observation of wintering birds. Over the years, 219 bird specias have been registered there. There is an observation post along the footpath which provides undisturbed birdwatching in their natural habitat and behaviour: during feeding time, nesting, rest and socialization. There is also an info centre with a small permanent photographic bird exhibition from Palud. Rallus aquaticus is the trademark of this ornithological sanctuary.
